The 2880 Film Blitz, Montreal’s perennial 48-hour filmmaking contest, blows out 7 candles from May 29 to 31!

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Montreal’s premier 48-hour filmmaking contest, the 2880 Film Blitz, is back for its 7th annual showcase of our city’s biggest and brightest cinematic wild childs! From May 29 to 31, 12 teams will take part in a feverish race against the clock to write, shoot and edit a 5-minute short film in under 2880 minutes.

The event caps off with a gala screening on Sunday, May 31st at Club Soda (1225 Saint-Laurent), where jury and audience prizes will be awarded to the finest films. The 2009 jury is comprised of Brett Gaylor (Director, RIP: Remix Manifesto), Danny Lennon (Programmer, Prends Ça Court!), Marie-Anne Raulet (Executive Director, RIDM) and Natalia Wysocka (Film Editor, ICI / Famous Québec).
2880 Film Blitz’s Producers have chosen documentary and its offbeat cousin the mockumentary as the genres of choice for this special Doc or Mock? edition of the contest, as all shorts produced must fit into one of the aforementioned genres. The Blitz is always made all the more nerve-racking for contestants thanks to a secret theme and object that they must incorporate into their films…and which are only revealed once the countdown begins at 7 p.m. on May 29!

2880 Film Blitz – Doc or Mock? Edition
Sunday, May 31 – 7:00 PM

Proceeds from the 2880 Film Blitz will help DOC Québec to continue to offer valuable services and events to the filmmaking community in Québec.

DOC Québec invites you to meet the new leaders of the National Film Board’s French Program.
Monique Simard, head of the French Program, together with Colette Loumède and Marie-Dominique Bonmariage will explain everything you want to know about changes since her arrival at the NFB.

Since 70 years, NFB produces quality documentaries, often in partnership with independent producers. In a context where documentary filmmakers face new challenges due to fast technological evolution, in production as much as in distribution, it is important to understand where the NFB stands, it’s priorities and how it will contribute to the continued development of documentary filmmaking.

The discussion will be followed by a question and answer period and an informal meet and greet.

A DOC Québec member, Monique Simard became head of the NFB French Program in late 2008. From 1998 to 2008, she was head and producer at Les Productions Virage where she produced more than 30 documentaries directed both by known and emerging directors. Very much involved in the cinema world, she was member of many boards of directors and was amongst the founding members of Les Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal and of L’Observatoire du documentaire.

Marie-Dominique Bonmariage, Assistant Director Programming and Digital Strategies, has spent more than 20 years in cinema and media arts. Most recently she was responsible for promotion and broadcasting at SODEC. She was also head of Vidéographe where she implemented the digitizing of the their collection. From 1996 to 2004, she was the administrative director of the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma and of the Cinéma Parallèle.

Colette Loumède, Head Producer, has spent more than 20 years producing films, in particular at the Coop Vidéo in Montréal, Productions du Regard and Synercom Téléproductions. She joined SODEC as analyst and was responsible for selecting documentary and feature projects. From 2002 to 2007 she was executive producer at the documentary Studio A of the NFB French Program. In January 2007, she became head of the documentary program at INIS, before coming back to the NFB.

RIP: A REMIX MANIFESTO OPENING ON MARCH 6 AT THE AMC AND CINEMA DU PARC

Friday, March 6th, 2009

THE AWARD-WINNING DOC FROM THE FRONT LINES OF THE COPYLEFT REVOLUTION

“RiP expands the language of genre and pushes the envelope of creativity. Thought-provoking, passionate, and of contemporary relevance to everyone who consumes media.” – Mark Achbar, director of The Corporation.

“…a knockout. RiP is a dazzling frontal assault on how corporate culture is using copyright law to muzzle freedom of expression.”– Brian D. Johnson, Maclean’s Magazine

Kinosmith, EyeSteelFilm and the National Film Board of Canada are pleased to announce that RiP: A REMIX MANIFESTO will open this Friday March 6 at AMC Forum in English and at Cinéma du Parc with French subtitles. This EyeSteelFilm/NFB award-winning documentary is a pioneering film that explores the cultural war between the CopyLeft – the remix generation who are no longer asking permission to borrow from the CopyRight – the entertainment giants who dominated the 20th century by concentrating power through ever broadening copyright laws.

Directed by Vancouver native, now Montreal based filmmaker and Web activist Brett Gaylor, and produced by the same team as the theatrical smash-hit Up the Yangtze (EyeSteelFilm/NFB), RiP has received the Audience Choice Award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, the Special Jury Prize at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, and both the Audience Choice and Special Jury Prize at the Whistler Film Festival.

Synopsis

With the advent of digital technology, copyright has become the defining cultural issue of our time. This film follows Girl Talk, a bio-medical engineer turned sample-based pop star who exploded to infamy and hipster adoration in 2008 by creating irresistible mash-up anthems combining hundreds of top-40 favourites. His music has made the the best album lists of Rolling Stone, Blender, WIRED, The Village Voice, PitchFork and The New York Times. RiP challenges copyright law in solidarity with Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig, culture critic Cory Doctorow (BoingBoing.net) and Brazilian music legend Gilberto Gil. The film cinematically presents how the 20th century’s cultural icons, from Walt Disney to The Rolling Stones, built empires off the creations of others, while at the same time sending lawyers after anyone who dared to remix their “property.” By incorporating contributions from thousands of Web users, RiP is part of a movement to rebuild the public domain and re-think intellectual property.

AMC FORUM: Original English version, audio Dolby 5.1
CINÉMA DU PARC: Original English version with French subtitles, audio Dolby 5.1

RIP: A REMIX MANIFESTO, an EyeSteelFilm and National Film Board co-production, is presented by Documentary, and produced in association with Canal D, SODEC, the Rogers Documentary Fund, and the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec. The documentary is written and directed by Brett Gaylor, produced by Mila Aung-Thwin (ESF), Kat Baulu (NFB), Germaine Ying Gee Wong (NFB) and executive produced by Daniel Cross, Mila Aung-Thwin, Ravida Din (NFB) and Sally Bochner (NFB).

Under Rich Earth: Ecuadoran farmers fight off violent attacks from militia men as they battle a Canadian mining company.

under rich earth

Watch trailer here: http://www.cinemapolitica.org/node/512

Malcolm Rogge / Canada / 2008 / 92 min

In the opening moments of Malcolm Rogge’s unsettling and eye-opening Under Rich Earth, a group of small children point to some gun shells lying in the dirt at the edge of a rural road in Ecuador. Who put the shells there and why are matters of great contention and conflict. The former owners of the casings maintain that the incident resulting in their new roadside location never actually happened. But in the eyes of the people at whom the bullets were fired, the 2006 event is very real, representing the latest escalation of a decade-old fight over land, resources and environmental autonomy.

In the mid-nineties, a Japanese mining company secured the rights to extract copper in the northwest part of Ecuador known as Intag, one of the world’s most environmentally threatened regions. Residents staged massive protests against the project, which ended in the burning of a mining camp and the departure of the company. But in 2002, despite an ordinance banning mining in the area, the Ministry of Energy and Mines sold the area’s two mining concessions, which ended up in the hands of the Canadian company Ascendant Copper. More protests followed, and tensions were exacerbated by the hiring of outside companies that used intimidation to control the area. The conflict eventually peaked in the vicious confrontation that left those shells by the roadside.

Using revealing and startling footage, Rogge reconstructs what happened that day in 2006, and links the violent images to global economics. A display of front-line journalism at its best, the footage leaves little doubt of what actually occurred, yet the interpretations by the different parties, particularly those from the company that hired the shooters, provide a fascinating glimpse into corporate spin and the politics of globalization. An indictment of governmental largesse, environmental exploitation and corporate greed, Under Rich Earth is urgent and vital filmmaking in the spirit of past Festival favourites like Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance and Manufactured Landscapes. Emotionally gripping and politically motivating, Under Rich Earth exposes the truth – not just about what happened that singular day, but also about just how pervasive such stories are on our planet today.[from the TIFF website]

Palestinian Perspectives IV at Cinémathèque québécoise

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Friday January 16 2009 7PM

La couleur des olives

by Carolina Rivas and Daoud Sarhandi, Palestine/Mexico, 97 min., original Arabic version with French subtitles

Like many Palestinian families, the Amers live surrounded by the infamous West Bank Wall. Their daily lives are dominated by electrified fences, locks and a constant swarm of armed soldiers. Through a sensitive lens we discover the private world of all eight members of the family. As their dramas unfold we catch a glimpse of their constant struggles and the small, endearing details that sustain them: including school friends, olive trees and two small donkeys. The story of the Amer family offers an opportunity to reflect on the effects of racial segregation, the meaning of borders and the absurdity of war. This documentary reveals the unknown life of the Palestinian people.

Preceded by A Day in Palestine, by Mary Ellen Davis, José Garcia-Lozano and Will Eizlini, Quebec/Canada, 5 min., no dialogue

Scenes of everyday life in the occupied Palestinian territories, with a dream-like feeling, reminiscent of home-movies of the 60s. But instead of a day at the beach, or in the backyard: an olive tree, a wall, a bulldozer, soldiers.

Friday January 23 2009 7PM

Alsateh (The Roof)

by Kamal Aljafari, Palestine/Germany, 63 min., original Arabic version with English subtitles

Palestinian director Kamal Aljafari’s poetic and political film records his journey back to his family and homeland and explores his firm conviction that “home” can be a feeling as well as an actual place. Aljafari’s voyage is less a definite search for memories than an attempt to view the present as a living past. As his camera pans slowly around the rooms of homes inhabited, damaged and ruined, past and present collide.

Preceded by Roads through Palestine, by Brett Story and Stefan Christoff, Quebec/Canada, 17 min., no dialogue

An audio-visual journey through the roads of occupation and resistance in the West Bank, and a poetic and cinematic reflection on the geography of war.
