A l’occasion de la sortie du livre Challenge for Change: Activist Documentary at the National Film Board of Canada, sur les 2 programmes très connus et novateurs de l’ONF consacrés au changement social, Challenge for Change et Société Nouvelle, venez rencontrer les éditeurs du livre, Thomas Waugh, Ezra Winton et Michael Brendan Baker et des personnalités ayant participé à ces aventures.
Les origines de ces programmes, méthodes, différences et son influence sur les jeunes documentaristes seront abordées et illustrées d’extraits de films.

En présence notamment de Dorothy Todd Hénaut, Robert Forget, Fernand Dansereau, Olivier Fougères, et de la réalisatrice Shannon Walsh avec l’équipe de son film A Saint-Henri le 26 août.

On the occasion of the publication of Challenge for Change: Activist Documentary at the National Film Board of Canada, an examination of the radical politics and cinema of the NFB’s legendary documentary film programs devoted to social change, Challenge for Change and Société Nouvelle come and meet the editors Thomas Waugh, Ezra Winton and Michael Brendan Baker and some of the leading figures who took part in these programs.
The origins, methods, differences of these programs and their influence on the younger documentarists will be discussed and illustrated with films excerpts.

In the presence of Dorothy Todd Hénaut, Robert Forget, Fernand Dansereau, Olivier Fougères, and the filmmaker Shannon Walsh with the crew of her project A Saint-Henri le 26 août.

Pepita Ferrari, réalisatrice du film L’Art du réel, le cinéma documentaire abordera son expérience d’avoir eu en entrevue plus d’une trentaine de documentaristes, dont Albert Maysles, Errol Morris, Alanis Obomsawin, Michel Brault, Nick Broomfield, Kim Longinotto, Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, et comment elle les a encouragé à partager leur vision de leur métier.

A l’aide d’extraits de L’Art du réel… et d’autre œuvres documentaires, Pepita Ferrari proposera une exploration en profondeur des points clés ayant un impact sur l’utilisation réussie du matériel d’entrevue dans le documentaire : Différentes approches visuelles de l’entrevue, sélection des personnes à aborder en entrevue, la construction de la relation réalisateur-personnage, l’impact de la caméra et la façon de composer avec différentes dynamiques psychologiques ou de situations.

Pepita Ferrari, director of Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary discusses her experience of interviewing more than thirty filmmakers – including Albert Maysles, Errol Morris, Alanis Obomsawin, Michel Brault, Nick Broomfield, Kim Longinotto Jean-Xavier de Lestrade – and how she encouraged them to share their insight into the craft.

Using excerpts from Capturing Reality and other documentary works, Pepita Ferrari will offer an in-depth exploration of some of the key areas impacting the successful use of interview material in documentary: different visual approaches to interviewing subjects, selecting interview subjects, building the director-subject relationship, the impact of camera and dealing with various situational or psychological dynamics.

In partnership with Femmes du cinéma de la télévision et des nouveaux médias (FCTNM)

Pour souligner la numérisation du film Une histoire de femmes (1980), documentaire sur l’engagement des femmes dans la grève de leurs maris contre la compagnie minière INCO à Sudbury, venez rencontrer Sophie Bissonnette, Martin Duckworth et Joan Kuyek, coordinatrice du groupe de soutien des femmes lors de la grève, pour revivre l’aventure du film gagnant du Prix de la critique en 1980 et faire le point sur le cinéma d’intervention sociale, son histoire, ses méthodes et ses enjeux aujourd’hui.

On the occasion of the digitalisation of the film Une histoire de femmes (1980), a documentary about women’s commitment in the strike against the mining company INCO in Sudbury, come and meet Sophie Bissonnette, Martin Duckworth and Joan Kuyek, who chaired wives Supporting the Strike, to relive the adventure of the film, Quebec’s Critics Association Prize (1980), and evaluate the situation of social activism cinema, its history, methods and today’s approaches.
