A Snapshot of Canadian Photographer Larry Towell on Bravo!

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Territories has its world television premiere on November 18 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT on Bravo!

Larry Towell, acclaimed photojournalist and the only Canadian member of the prestigious Magnum photo agency, concentrates on seeing beauty in the small things. Whether capturing his own family or struggling Middle-Eastern communities, Towell maintains a humanist and universal approach to his subjects. Clothed in his uniform of choice – plaid shirt, straw hat, jeans and suspenders – the man from Bothwell, Ontario travels to the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the U.S.-Mexico border to continue his photographic exploration of human migration and the physical barriers restricting it. Although intrigued by society’s need to alter landscape in order to divide people, Towell points out “I am not a news photographer. My work sometimes is translated into the media, but I don’t shoot news. I photograph events in time that become historical events.”

Territories, directed by Montréal-born Mary Ellen Davis and produced by Périphéria Productions in association with Bravo!, follows Towell on his travels as he discusses his work, creative process, and his presence during the 9/11 attacks.

Périphéria Productions, a producer of dynamic and innovative films, is committed to supporting author-driven content, on the small screen and on the big screen. Recent productions include Midnight Ballads (2006), Souvenir Kids (2005) and Urban Chronicle (2003).

Bravo! is a sojourn in the television landscape where viewers make a regular appointment with the arts. A proud supporter of the Canadian independent production community, Bravo! funds approximately 100 hours of independently produced documentaries and performing arts specials a year. Bravo! is owned by CTV Limited, a division of CTVglobemedia, Canada’s premier multi-media company.
